Valentine’s Day is coming up, and you need a present! But, you’re stuck on what to give to your significant other. Well, you’re in luck because I’ve curated a fantastic list of gift ideas featuring products from other Canadian small businesses.
From cozy robes and pretty jewelry to handmade dryer balls, wax melts and cards, this guide has you covered! If you’re interested in what Hillcroft Housecoats, Gu+Ava Design Studio, Marashi, Suspicious Package Handmade and Thoughtfully Handmade have to offer, keep on reading.
Jewelry is the quintessential Valentine’s Day gift. That’s why I had to include a jewelry designer in this gift guide! The jewelry that Melissa and John from Gu+Ava Design Studio make is not your typical ones. Their products are made with the highest quality possible and have a story behind each piece.
For example, their turquoise beaded bracelet and earrings set embodies power, wisdom, luck and protection. It will protect the wearer against negative forces and brings tranquillity. What a perfect for your significant other! Their designs are simple but unique and full of colour.
Gu+Ava Design Studio’s bracelets, earrings and necklaces are all made with various gemstones and crystals to fit any aesthetic. Their bracelets are also strung on elastic cords, so it accommodates a variety of wrist sizes. We love the size inclusivity! I love how Melissa and John combine fashion with intention in their designs.
2. Wax Melts
If your significant other is into self-care and relaxation, then you have to check out Marashi’s handmade wax melts! The owner, Rushauna, hand-pours each one in small batches. That way, each melt is made with love and care. All of them are made from soy wax, so it’s more natural and better to inhale, and scented with simple ingredients.
Each batch of wax melts requires precision and patience. Rushauna has to measure out each ingredient using a scale! After melting the wax down and stirring in colour and scent, the mixture is poured into clamshells. Can you believe it takes 24 hours to cure? And I thought my 6-minute tassels took a long time to make!
If you don’t know what wax melts are, you’re not alone! They are alternatives to a traditional candle and don’t have wicks for you to light. Instead, they are meant to be slowly warmed using a wax warmer. Why should you buy wax melts over candles? Well, you can mix your own scent! Just place two differently scantily melts in the same warmer and ta-da!
Speaking of scents, Marashi has a wide variety for you to choose from. From fruity to clean cotton, you’ll definitely find something that your partner will enjoy! To place your order, head to Marashi’s Instagram page.
3. Luxury Robe
Continuing with the relaxation theme, if your valentine loves cute and comfy robes, then you need to check out Hillcroft Housecoats! Cortney, the owner, started the brand because she hates wearing pants! She likes to wake up and throw on something quick but cozy, and long enough to cover her legs. So, a robe became the perfect solution!
However, her robes aren’t “your grandma’s robes”. They’re long, sleek and comfortable- perfect to wear during your morning routine or chilling on the couch. They’re made from a blend of rayon (made from bamboo), organic cotton and spandex. They’re also OEKO-TEX Certified, meaning no harsh chemicals were used to produce the fabric.
The robes from Hillcroft Housecoats comes in many colours, so there is plenty to choose from! Their housecoats are different from the typical ones you find in stores. Standard robes are either fuzzy and bulky or short and slinky. Not Cortney’s robes! They’re the perfect mix of comfortable and beautiful.
If your significant other hates wearing pants like Cortney, I’m sure they will appreciate this gift! To purchase, head to Hillcroft Housecoats’s website. Don’t forget to visit their Instagram page for sale and giveaway alerts!
4. Dryer Balls
Okay, so dryer balls may not be the first thing that pops up when thinking about a Valentine’s Day gift. But, when you see the ones by Agnes from Suspicious Package Handmade, you’ll change your tune! All of her dryer balls are made from Canadian sourced fleece and wool roving. We love it when shops source locally!
I love how Agnes dryer balls aren’t a dull white. Instead, hers are so colourful they could be art pieces! Agnes hopes by making them more fun and pretty, it encourages more people to make the switch from single-use dryer sheets. Each set lasts up to 1000 washes, which is incredible! You can also add drops of essential oils to the balls if you still want the scent.
Suspicious Package Handmade’s dryer balls are also packaged sustainably! Each set is held together by a cotton string, which can be composted, and a recyclable paper tag that has all of the product information and usage directions.
If your valentine is eco-conscious, this is the perfect gift! Agnes doesn’t sell on Etsy and doesn’t have a website. However, you can find her products all over Ontario. She sells them at Ste Anne’s Spa in Grafton, Markets by Dream Day in Brooklin, Petit Nordique Boutique in Bowmanville and Simcoe Street Market in Beaverton. If you want custom orders, you can message Agnes via Instagram and pick them up in Brooklin at Markets by Dream Day or Oshawa at The Makers Hub. Another option is to visit a market that Suspicious Package Handmade is attending! For more information, visit Suspicious Package Handmade’s Instagram page.
5. Handmade Cards
Whether this is your first Valentine’s Day or your 10th Valentine’s Day together, a handmade card says so much! This personalizes any gift in this gift guide even further. You can write whatever you want inside as all of my cards are blank inside. If you’re on a budget, a handmade card is a great standalone gift too!
Handmade by me, intended for you to give, all of my cards are meant to spread joy to whoever receives it. I started Thoughtfully Handmade with a mission to help others spread positivity. Giving a handmade card is a small gesture that can bring a lot of happiness to people’s lives.
My cards are unique since no two are identical, and I only produce 6-8 cards for each design. Once they’re gone, they’re gone! By purchasing something from me, you’re also donating ten cents to Toronto Environmental Alliance.
If you’re interested, you can click any of my photos, and it will take you to their product page. Or, you can shop my entire Valentine’s Day collection! Don’t forget to check out my Instagram because I’ll have a Valentine’s Day giveaway soon!
I hope this gift guide has inspired you to gift more thoughtfully and shop locally! Just remember that it’s not about how much money you spend- it’s the intention that counts. Happy Valentine’s Day!
